Boiler installation in St Ives

We install and replace boilers throughout St Ives. The important part happens before anything is fitted: working out what output the house actually needs, whether the existing pipework and radiators can carry it, and what the flue can lawfully do.

Why boiler installation in St Ives is its own job

St Ives is the hardest town on this list to work in, and any plumber who tells you otherwise has not tried to get a bathroom suite into Downalong in August. It is also one of the most rewarding — beautiful granite property, a huge amount of high-end refurbishment work, and owners who care about the job being done properly.

The property here

The old quarter, Downalong, is a dense maze of granite fishermen's cottages on lanes measured in feet rather than metres. Above it, Victorian and Edwardian terraces climb the hill, and out at Carbis Bay and Lelant you find larger detached property and a good deal of recent high-specification renovation.

What catches people out in St Ives

Access defines everything here. Much of Downalong cannot take a van at all, so kit and materials come in by hand and the job has to be planned properly in advance — you cannot nip back to the merchant for a fitting. We order and stage materials before we start rather than discovering the problem on day one. On top of that, the granite cottages have thick solid walls, minimal plant space and no obvious route for a flue, and a very high proportion of the town is second homes and holiday lets, which means unoccupied properties where a small leak has weeks to become a large one.

Boiler installation in St Ives — what actually matters

Installing where a van cannot reach

A boiler, a cylinder and two days of materials carried in by hand changes both the schedule and the price, and it has to be planned rather than discovered. We price the access honestly at quote stage.

Specifying for an empty house

A property standing empty for months wants controls that hold a frost-protection temperature and, ideally, remote monitoring so you know when something has gone wrong. That specification decision at installation is worth far more here than the last few percent of efficiency.

Sizing for solid granite walls

A granite cottage with no cavity loses heat at a rate that standard assumptions badly underestimate. Size the boiler and radiators to the actual fabric and the house is warm; size it to a table and the occupant spends fifteen years wondering why it never quite gets there.

Specifying for salt exposure

On an exposed coastal plot, flue terminal position, condensate routing and the choice of external materials matter far more than they would inland. Getting that right at installation is the difference between a boiler that lasts its life and one that corrodes early.

What we cover

  • Combi, system and heat-only boiler installation
  • Like-for-like replacement and full system conversions
  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation before specification
  • Back boiler removal and conversion
  • Oil and LPG boiler installation as well as mains gas
  • Unvented hot water cylinder installation
  • System flushing and filter fitting as standard
  • Building control notification and warranty registration

How it works

  1. 1

    Survey — in person

We look at the house, the pipework, the radiators, the flue route and the gas supply. A boiler cannot be specified properly from a web form and we do not pretend otherwise.

  2. 2

    Heat loss calculation

Room by room, so the boiler and the radiators are sized to the building. This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the step that determines your running costs for the next fifteen years.

  3. 3

    A fixed written quote

Itemised, with the appliance named and the warranty stated. No pressure, and it stays valid long enough for you to think about it.

  4. 4

    Installation

Typically one to two days for a straight replacement, longer for a conversion. Dust sheets, and the heating back on the same evening wherever possible.

  5. 5

    Handover and registration

We commission it, show you how it works, register the warranty and notify building control. You get the paperwork before we leave.

What it costs

Every installation is quoted individually after a survey, at a fixed price. We do not publish a price list for boilers because a number without a survey behind it is a number that changes on the day — which is precisely the practice that gives this trade its reputation.

Mains gas in St Ives

St Ives and Carbis Bay have mains gas in most of the built-up area, but running a new supply into the older parts of Downalong is rarely straightforward.

Straight answers

Boiler installation in St Ives — your questions

If yours is not here, send us the form and ask. We would rather spend five minutes answering a question than have you book something you did not need.

How long does a boiler installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like swap is usually a day, sometimes two. Moving the boiler, converting from a back boiler, or changing system type takes longer and we will tell you honestly at quote stage.

Do I need a magnetic filter?

Yes, and we fit one as standard. Most manufacturer warranties now require one, and it is the cheapest thing you can do to protect the heat exchanger.

Should I switch to a combi?

Not always. Combis suit smaller properties with one bathroom and good mains pressure. If you have two bathrooms, poor incoming pressure or several people showering at once, a system boiler and cylinder is usually the better answer — and plenty of firms will sell you the combi anyway.

What about a heat pump instead?

For an off-grid property currently on oil or LPG, a heat pump is genuinely worth modelling. For a solid-walled granite cottage with no insulation, it usually is not, yet. We will give you a straight answer rather than a sales pitch either way.

Do you cover the villages around St Ives as well as the town?

Yes — Carbis Bay, Lelant, Halsetown, Zennor, Towednack, Porthmeor and Downalong are all part of our normal St Ives patch, along with the smaller places between them. If you are not sure whether we reach you, send the form and ask.

How quickly can you get to St Ives?

In via Lelant off the A30. Summer access into the town is genuinely difficult and we plan around it rather than over-promising.
